Southern Leyte

Scuba Diving Philippines

Southern Leyte is a province of the Philippines located in the Eastern Visayas region.  Maasin City is the capital of the province and Limasawa, an island to the south is part of the province where the first Christian mass was held and is said to be the birthplace of Christianity in the Philippines. The province ranks as the second least populated area in the region.

Panaon Island features the Napantaw Marine Sanctuary with walls and slopes filled with hard and soft corals.  The walls are covered with great gorgonians and black corals and there is an incredible density of fish, including giant frogfish on the top of the wall.  This area has been protected for more than 10 years so pristine diving abounds… Padre Burgos -Burgos jetty, is a maze of piers covered in soft corals with seahorses, juvenile lionfish, frogfish, and pink cowries calling it home. Further afield stargazers and snake eels make night diving spectacular…  Limasawa Island is part of the largest sanctuary in Southern Leyte. Off the edge of the steep walls you have excellent chances of seeing whalesharks and manta’s.

Whale Sharks…  at the peak of the season you have an almost 100% chance of snorkeling with whale sharks and unlike Donsol, a very good chance of diving with them too. Whale sharks have been constant visitors to Limasawa, Napantaw, Padre Burgos and Liloan.  This is one trip not to be missed….
